About Us
Taylor Associates/Communications, Inc. (Taylor) is founded on decades of pioneering development in the field of reading technology. Taylor is dedicated to helping students of all ages develop and improve the processes that are the foundation of reading efficiency and thorough comprehension.
Historical Background
In 1931, Earl, James and Carl Taylor developed the Ophthalmograph and the Metronoscope, two of the first instruments to be used in reading instruction in the United States.
A generation after the development of these early reading instruments, Stanford E. Taylor founded Educational Developmental Laboratories, Inc. (later EDL/McGraw-Hill). Subsequently he invented the Reading Eye I Camera and conducted the only large scale eye-movement recording norm study. Thirty-nine colleges and universities participated. While at EDL, Mr. Taylor designed the Look, Listen, Learn system of beginning instruction for children and the Learning 100 system of adult basic education. Both of these systems employed a variety of instructional devices also invented by Mr. Taylor, including the Aud-X, the Controlled Reader and the Tach-X Tachistoscope.
Stanford Taylor later founded Instructional/Communications Technology, Inc. (I/CT), which produced a comprehensive Guided Reading library, an array of tachistoscopic programs, listening training materials, and an extensive comprehension and study skills kit series. In addition, he developed the Guided Reader, a simplified controlled reading device, the Tach-Mate tachistoscope and the Apple version of the Visagraph®, a computerized eye-movement recording system.
Recent Developments
In recent years, Stan Taylor founded Taylor Associates/Communications, Inc. and developed the Reading Plus® assessment and instructional system along with the Visagraph® II Eye-Movement Recording System. Over 50 million students have used some form of Taylor instructional programs, including earlier versions of Reading Plus® that used filmstrips and cassette approaches. Currently thousands of schools use the Reading Plus® System as a vital supplement to their reading curriculum.
In 2003, Taylor Associates redeveloped the Reading Plus® system for browser-based delivery. In 2004, the browser-based version of the Visagraph® III was released along with the new Reading Plus® system for Grades 1-12, college, and industry. In 2005, Reading Plus® courses were made available for home users through the internet so that a wider audience could enjoy the benefits that the program has to offer.
Taylor is dedicated to making reading more comfortable and enjoyable by providing effective instructional software for students of all ages.
