Silent Reading Fluency
When we read, we take “mental pictures” of words or word parts and assemble these pictures into phrases and sentences which we then interpret into meaning. The ability to assemble these word pictures sequentially at rates that allow us to read aloud with expression is what is often referred to as fluency. Fluent oral rates, however, are roughly 125 words per minute (wpm) , while the ability to read in excess of 300 wpm with good comprehension is required of high school and college students to enable them to keep up with their coursework. Moving from fluent oral reading to fluent sustained silent reading is a critical milestone for success.

Reading Plus® helps students make this transition by providing intensive visual/perceptual practice which makes reading easier, more rapid, and enjoyable.
