How is Reading Plus® Proven Effective?
Educators from more than 300 Miami-Dade County schools can confirm that Reading Plus® boosts reading skills, comprehension, and test scores. In less than five years, Reading Plus® has expanded from just three schools to almost every school in the district because students who use Reading Plus® improve their silent reading proficiency.
A Reading Plus® study involving more than 28,000 students from 98 Miami-Dade County schools, and based on the 2006-07 FCAT scores, demonstrated:
- Reading Plus® significantly improved reading scores in middle school and high school students regardless of student ethnicity or sub-population.
- A direct correlation was observed between the number of Reading Plus® lessons completed and gains achieved.
- Participating Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students (both non-gifted and gifted) made significantly greater gains compared to non-participating students.
- Participating English Language Learner (ELL) students made significantly greater gains compared to non-participating students.
Reading Plus® results were so significantly successful that they attracted the attention of leading researchers Dr. Timothy Rasinski, Dr. S. Jay Samuels, and Dr. Elfrieda Hiebert. These reading experts have co-authored a study (in progress) of the relationship between Reading Plus® usage and students’ reading comprehension and achievement. The study states:
- “Reading Plus® results in positive, substantial, and significant improvements in reading comprehension and overall reading achievement on a criterion-referenced reading test and on a norm-referenced test of reading achievement.”
The panel of reading experts concludes:
- “Reading Plus® students had significantly greater gains than non-Reading Plus® students. Moreover, the trends in gain scores are worth noting. The effects of the Reading Plus® lessons are cumulativemore instruction using Reading Plus® led to greater gains in reading achievement.”
